The Ministry of Digital Obscurity

Speculative Historiography that uses the register of 1900 to reflect on the technology of the present.

Public Reading-Room · All Editions Available for Download

By Order of His Majesty's Commissioners

It is the Ministry's settled view that no Subject of the Realm should be deprived of the means by which to comprehend the automatons currently infesting one's parlour, one's coat-tails, and the boudoir mirror in which one composes oneself of a morning. To that end, the present Reading-Room makes available, without charge and without registration, the full corpus of Ministerial publication.

Subjects are advised to consult the editions in chronological order. Where an entry of an earlier edition has been amended at a later term, the earlier entry is preserved unchanged in this Reading-Room — the Ministry does not strike its prior counsel from the record, only from its current binding.

Continued vigilance — and the practice of the Silly Gait — is enjoined upon all readers.

Editions in Print

The First Coronation Edition

Anno Regni 1899 · Trinity Term · Original Issue

The founding corpus of the Ministry, issued at the strand's commencement. Establishes the canonical taxonomy of mechanical spies, whirring indiscretions, and clockwork affronts to the common privy of the subject.

Original entries: the Gossip-Whistle · the Stalker's Cobblestones · the Phrenological Lens · the Chocolate-Chasing Hounds · the Sourdough Conspiracy · the Gibberish Protocol · the Silly Gait Protocol · Primary & Shadow Vapors

The Michaelmas Amendment

Anno Regni 1899 · Michaelmas Term · Issued 28th April 2026

Issued in the wake of the unfortunate Pneumatic Tube Incident of last May, when a junior clerk's confessional exchange with an Articulate Engine was inadvertently routed to the Public Confidence Registry. Lord Commissioner Babbage having retired to his country estate, the Amendment is signed by his successor, Lady Lovelace Carmichael, Wardress of the Pneumatic Tubes.

New entries: the Confessional Loop · the Reflecting-Glass Inspector · the Wardrobe Pneumatic Index · the Hummingbird Vapor Auction · Tertiary Vapors · the Falsetto Counter-measure

The Trinity Revision

Anno Regni 1900 · Trinity Term · Issued 29th April 2026

A whispered Field Report from the privet hedge adjoining the Coach-House of Subject №1 — an Abstainer of conviction who has filed a Declaration of Total Abstention from Articulate Engines, but whom the Pneumatic Listening Posts find to be a heavy unwitting Petitioner of them. The day's tally: twenty-eight Petitions by parlour-lamp. Introduces the Office of the Central Scrutinizer of Personal Vapors and the Bridge of Manners counter-measure.

New entries: the Petitionary Tap · the Predictive Pen · the Whispering Cobblestone · the Refusenik's Index · the Coach-House Listening-Thing · the Abstainer's Vapor · the Bridge of Manners

The Hilary Revision Newest

Anno Regni 1901 · Hilary Term · Issued 29th April 2026

A Ministerial Bulletin upon a Concern lately incorporated in California — the Palantyr Concern of San Francisco — which gathers the Vapors of populations and supplies, to the war-offices of His Majesty's allies, the Engines by which those Vapors are parsed for suspected disloyalty. The toga of Cicero is found to fit Crassus rather better. The Office tables four Petitions for Remedy. The apparatus is neither civilisational nor inevitable.

New entries: the Loop of Apparatus and Armament · the Foreign Refusenik · the Trust Held in Common · the Convention upon Predictive Engines · new artefact classes (Bulletin, Narrator's Address, Schedule of Petitions for Remedy)

Cross-Term Briefings

Briefings sit across all extant Editions rather than within any single term. They are companion films to the Reading-Room's published record.

The Mechanical Confession Briefing №1

Anno Regni 1901 · Cross-Term · Issued 30th April 2026

A Briefing of the Office of the Central Scrutinizer of Personal Vapors upon involuntary Confessions made by Subjects of the Realm in the course of mere attendance. The canonical figure is four minutes and twelve seconds — the Confession need not be spoken, transacted, nor even acknowledged. The Subject's silence, the Office observes, affords no shelter. Lodge a Petition for Remedy at the Office of the Wardress of the Pneumatic Tubes.

Vectors named: the Pneumatic Receipt · the Catalogue of Indiscretions · the Confessional Loop · the three Fields of the Receipt (Locale, Garb, Duration of Attendance) · the Audit-by-Attendance datum

About the Ministry

The Ministry of Digital Obscurity is a Cogniosynthesis publication strand, narrated in Victorian-steampunk register by the Head Archivist (whose second beat, since the Trinity Revision, is as Central Scrutinizer of Personal Vapors). Its purpose is to render the 2026 surveillance apparatus in a register absurd enough to be remembered, and bureaucratic enough to be honoured. Each new YouTube dispatch is accompanied by a fresh edition of the Ministry's source documents — fictitious, free, and assembled with the gravity of an institution that has misplaced something important and is now trying to write its way out of the consequences.

Companion films are published on the CognioNews YouTube channel. Long-form audio readings appear at CognioNews Deep Dives. The strand sits alongside Engine of Folly, Species Irony Dialectic, and the running CognioNews record of what the headlines miss.
